The interpack 2017 trade fair in Düsseldorf was once again themed entirely around the topic of packaging: 2,865 companies from different categories attracted approximately 170,500 visitors, keen to learn more about new packaging solutions. Probably a record: 74 percent of them travelled from abroad specifically for the fair – three-quarters of them decision-makers.
As a supporter of the “Save Food” initiative, Der Grüne Punkt was on show in the Innovationparc Packaging. The numerous visitors from all over the world were manifestly impressed by the intelligent solutions presented for recycling, the diversity of colors, and the quality of the Systalen plastic recyclates. They were particularly fascinated by the variety of possible applications – from construction to automotive and also domestic – that Systalen offers. Members of the North Rhine-Westphalian FDP parliamentary party visited Der Grüne Punkt’s stand, and consulted with CEO Michael Wiener on how recycling can be meaningfully progressed.
For its innovative bottles, Werner & Mertz’s “Recyclate Initiative” has in this context won the “Pack the Future Award”. Together with the bottle manufacturer Alpla-Werke Alwin Lehner GmbH & Co KG and Der Grüne Punkt, the company secured the prize in the “Ecodesign” category. What’s special about the bottles is this: they are made 100 percent of recycled plastic from the Yellow Sack. The primary challenge involved here was to create translucent, odor-free bottles. This is accomplished by using an optimized washing process and an additional decontamination step. Werner & Mertz thus achieves its goal of eliminating the coloration of packages in favor of recyclability.
Another out-of-the-ordinary winner of the “Pack the Future Award” is the “vaku-VIP-Thermobox” from Schaumaplast Nossen GmbH. In the newly introduced “Save Food” category, the returnable thermo-package won first place. Thanks to an extremely long useful lifetime coupled with minimized coolant consumption, the innovative box not only keeps foods fresh for longer, but at the same time reduces environmental impact. Besides the fruit and vegetables, the box itself, too, has a lengthier lifetime than conventional models. It can be re-used several times without any problems.
